This unique shape of 6 square faces and 8 triangular faces is also known as the Solar star when these faces are stellated into pyramid forms. The crystal garnet naturally has a cuboctahedral form. This shape was attibuted to alchemical properties by Buckminster Fuller as it jitterbugs or compresses to form the 5 Platonic Solids.
